An Old Tree By The Road

I had lost my way while returning from my friend's place in Jatani, Odisha. I took a less-maintained, muddy road, riding my bicycle. I could see an old, tall banyan tree in the distance. As I approached, I noticed a rope hanging with an empty loop, swinging vigorously as if someone had recently been using it. The tree's branches were very thick and bushy. As it was nearly sunset, the darkness was playing tricks on my eyes. I occasionally thought I saw faces in the branches, but dismissed them as illusions created by the light. Suddenly, I felt as if someone was grabbing me from behind. I couldn't see anyone, but the sensation was real. I started chanting holy mantras and quickened my pace. When I looked back, I saw someone hanging from the rope, their hair longer than usual, staring directly at me. Horrified, I lost control and started running. I saw a man covered in a dark shawl, standing and waving at me to come closer. As I approached, I realized they were ju...

In The Middle : Broken Glass

We all went to a wedding in Gatiroutpatna, Cuttack, in the evening. While returning from the party, our two families were on separate scooters, crossing the highway. As we approached an old banyan tree in the middle of the road, the wind suddenly turned chilly. Strangely, we started hearing loud noises of glass breaking around us. My brother, who was riding the other scooter, became worried, saying he could hear glass shattering and feared it might damage our tires, leading to an accident. However, to our surprise, there was no glass anywhere to be seen. We stopped by a roadside shop to investigate, and the shopkeeper told us a chilling story. Apparently, the banyan tree is haunted by the spirit of a woman who was brutally killed by a truck nearby. The spirit creates disturbances like eerie noises and fog to scare and distract passing motorists, often causing accidents. *Inspired by a true story shared by my maternal aunt

Fog : Someone Is Holding Me

I was 4 years old, living in Chintamaniswar, Bhubaneswar. One fine evening, we all had a ritual at the construction site of our future home. All my cousins, uncles, and aunts had come to our place. We were all playing outside when I ran straight to the nearby yard, filled with lots of mango trees and wild bushes called "amba tota" (botanical garden in Odia). We kept playing until sunset. But slowly, every kid returned except me. I had wandered into a dense fog amidst the mango trees. I was eventually found hugging a tree tightly, my hair unusually straight and my eyes rolled back. I was running a high fever and speaking incoherently. I was immediately taken home, and my dad called someone who could help expel evil spirits. They made a holy pyre called "Jhuna," whose smoke filled the room. As they spoke to the spirit within me, I suddenly spoke in a different voice, claiming to be a newlywed bride who had been attacked and raped by thugs while going to a movie with h...

Wake Up

The curtains were moving as the night gleamed at me. I was trying to sleep at my relative's place back in Koida, Odisha. I was working at the mines and had an early morning shift. Suddenly, at around 2 AM, I felt like I saw someone behind the curtains. The lights were switched off, but a shadow was visible due to the faint light coming from the corridor light. I got a bit startled and nervous, so I drank some water and tried to go back to sleep. A little later, I could see someone moving all over the place like a black shadow running. Then, I felt someone pushing my body out of the cot and saw a face close to me asking me to wake up. As I looked at the face, it just faded away with the darkness, but I could clearly remember its touch right on my chest. As soon as it was dawn, I woke up and fled from the place. My relatives mentioned a haunted neighborhood that resulted in some weird encounters of a shadow trying to wake up people who are fast asleep. More Stories: Kill: That Was Ju...

It created a sense of fear, but at the same time the thrill lingered around for days, turning me into an adventurous soul that pushed my intentions beyond being scared and thus ove...
