The Midnight Crawler: A Puri Horror Encounter Rooted in Indian Folklore

I came to visit my uncle's house when I was studying in Christ College, Cuttack. He and I were the best buddies when it comes to travel and food, and had the various food delicacies from the land of Cuttack to Puri to explore. One night I was staying at a place in Puri, and the place had a top floor with windows opening to tall mango laden trees and guava trees. I used to sleep their at night with the windows open to fight the heat. One night, I was late from college and had gone to a friend's place, my uncle was all alone but he was fast asleep. I went upstairs to the bedroom and the rooms were quite dark, I was tired so I didn't bother to switch on the light, just washed myself up in the bathroom and threw myself on the bed. There was a strange feeling as someone was trying to push me from my own bed. I was freaked out as to who would it be. I could almost feel four hands, as I stood up to switch on the lights, a human like figure in the dark crawled on it...

The Knocking at Kandarpur: A Chilling Cow Stable Mystery from Odisha’s Folklore

In Odisha there was a ranch that I know about since my childhood and that was the one at my ajja's place in Kandarpur. He used to tend his cows in a stable made of mud pillars. The stable had two rooms one was used as a smoke room or office room with his chair and table but mostly he used to smoke in there and the other one was the room where cows were tied up and had cow dunk filled all over the place. That room had a door that was wider, to use the cows ro take outside close to the garden during morning hours. There was a window attached to the smoke room, which opened to a wall or the neighbor's house and couple of coconut trees were adjacent to it. But even if you are sitting in the broad day light, you will get a certain eeriness coming from that window as though someone is looking at you when you are sitting on the chair or hiding inside the huge old bed with lot of compartments under it. That was my favorite hideout place as we spent most of our summer days in that ranch...

Bhoota Gappa: Petals From The Passing Glass

You remember that iconic moment in the cult classic Aradhana, where a man falls in love with a woman he glimpses on a train? Something similar happened to me — only far more chilling. It was in 2008, just before I boarded the Howrah-Alleppey Express. I stood on the platform, sipping a lukewarm cup of tea, when I saw her — a woman with eyes so hauntingly beautiful they seemed almost unreal. She wore a white saree with pink floral prints, her hair loosely braided, a few strands dancing across her face in the breeze. She didn’t look at me, but I felt something — a pull, like I had seen her in my dreams before. An overwhelming urge made me rush to board the train and find her. But once inside, she was gone. Nowhere to be seen in any compartment. That night, I ordered a veg biryani from the pantry and waited by the door of the train at the next station, hoping for another glimpse. The wind had grown colder, unnaturally so. As I stepped back in with a fresh cup of tea, a pale white figure ap...

A Face On The Window

I was 11 years old when this alarming incident happened. I was living in Rourkela ( Industrial City Of Steel) in the year 1995 when my final exams of seventh standard were over, and summer vacations had begun. My dad as he used to be friends with lot of buses that used to go to my native place Pattamundai, Odisha at night, decided to send me before hand with one of his trustworthy drivers and then join me later on. As my uncles will come and pick me up from the destination he knew I was in good hands. So the journey began and I happened to sit close to the window seat right next to the driver's seat. We were chit chatting all night with the driver's friends and passengers onboarding the bus. Suddenly at the middle of the night an old woman tapped at my window when most of the crowd was sound asleep just the driver was focusing on the drive. I looked at her as she was making gestures to give her something to eat. I didn't have anything so I asked my uncle who was sitting ne...

A Violent Dwarf Monkey Encounter

I am an old woman. Post-retirement, I thought I would be happier, but things grew darker. My workplace asked me to return part-time, which I didn’t mind. One night, as I slowly made my way to the parking lot of the old motel where I was staying—too tired to drive the two hours home—I saw something strange in the rearview mirror. A pale, blurry creature appeared, animal-like, with three legs and an abnormally large head. Its eyes locked with mine, unblinking. I couldn’t place it—maybe a raccoon or a strange rodent? I parked and began walking to the entrance, sensing someone—or something—trailing me. Too exhausted, I ignored it. Then, a sudden gust of icy wind slammed through me, knocking me flat onto the pavement. I was dazed. It felt like the creature had entered me—or passed through me—leaving an unnatural chill behind. Shivering, I scrambled to gather my things and rushed inside. Just then, another traveler approached. He had witnessed my fall while smoking outside. He said something...

The Snake Charmer : A One Night Dream

Have you ever dreamt of snakes? The night where you are falling into a pit of slithering snakes and all you can do is not move. The night where a snake is chasing you devouring everyone except you, while you are trying to catch your breath as its scale rubs against you im your hideout where finally those fangs get you.An old temple ruin in "Bhitarkanika", with girls, ladies and older women, walking on top of a high tower, suddenly I see a familiar face, my childhood friend all bald and squeezing the head of a snake with blood squirting out all over her face as she smiles, while getting back a strand of hair. I am standing as part of a long queue wandering what's going on. There's a dangerously looking women filled with snake hair, sitting on a throne made partially of black stone. She hisses at me with her eyes and asks me to go on, I reluctantly take a snake in my hand, which is slimy and trying to bite me, I cannot go ahead with the ritual as my hands are all sweaty...
