The Bhoota Gappa Journey

2minhorrorstories: The Last Night He Came Back..

I grew up in a joint family in a village in southern India called Kovvur. My father and his four brothers all lived under the same roof, along with their parents and grandparents. Each of them was married and had their own children, except for my father’s youngest brother—my uncle—who worked as an independent contractor.

My uncle had a habit of drinking heavily. He was an alcoholic, and despite my grandfather’s and mother’s constant efforts to make him quit, he found it extremely difficult to control himself. He worked hard during the day at construction sites and would return home in the evening, tired and withdrawn. Every night, he would sit in the courtyard outside his room with a glass of whiskey, listening to his favorite singer, Kishore Kumar. The air around him would grow heavy with a strange melancholy, as his music echoed through the house until he eventually went to sleep.

Then came the day when he fell seriously ill. His condition worsened quickly, and he began coughing up blood. Not long after, he passed away, leaving the entire family in grief.

After completing his last rites, we all returned home, exhausted, and went to sleep. But that same evening, at the exact hour he used to sit in the courtyard, something strange happened. From his room, we all heard the unmistakable sound of a bottle being opened, followed by a sad Kishore Kumar song playing near his window.

Everyone froze in shock.

One of my father’s brothers gathered the courage to go inside his room. He walked in, switched off the music as if nothing was out of the ordinary, and returned without saying a word. The house fell silent again, and eventually, everyone went back to sleep.

After that night, it never happened again.

But it felt as if he had come home one last time—just to sit in his place, listen to his music, and quietly say goodbye before leaving us forever.

Why did you write "2minhorrorstories"?   As an afternoon ritual back in my childhood days, my grandmother used to always narrate us stories about ghosts, witches, and unexplained incidents from her childhood, youth, to her middle age.    Those stories, enabled me to enter into a realm of a parallel dimension, that had some power beyond realism. Share Your "Bhoota Gappa" (Paranormal Experience)

In Odisha, and I believe maximum villages or rural cities in India, in the 90s era, when power outages used to be a usual norm. Anytime there was a storm, or a rainy day, in the evenings, the houses had no light, just a candle or an oil lamp amidst a group of family members with kids trying to mimic studying, while they are all distracted by all the insects flying to and fro the candle light. They start asking a question or a two to the elders, after which, storytime is officially triggered. The eldest of the house, starts telling a story of when they were a kid, and were accompanied by a friend or traveling by themselves. The story genre usually was horror, as kids used to be excited as well as curious of things that still remain unexplained. That's when "Bhoota Gappa", or a "Ghost Story", came into existence, where people shared their experiences, in which they encountered something or someone that they couldn't explain but somewhere in their minds it st...

You’ve written across genres — from poetry to horror. What drew you back to folklore-driven horror for Bhoota Gappa? Pratiksha: Horror was my first love as a storyteller, not the jump-scare kind, but the quiet chill of a grandmother’s tale. Folklore is where horror began. It’s also where culture lives.
