I was returning from the farmers' market when the usual road was blocked for construction. I used to live in Mayurbhanj, working for the iron ore plant at the time. This road was unfamiliar and unusually dark. Suddenly, I felt a shiver run through my spine as if someone had moved very close to me while I was riding my bicycle. I could see two figures at the end of the road. They seemed to be holding hands or standing very close to each other, and they were quite tall. As I approached, I realized it was just a tall tree with dangling branches.
Relieved, I was about to continue when I noticed a strand of long, hairy bush that didn't look like leaves. As I tried to shine my torch on the tree, I felt a presence very close to me, singing a strange song in an old woman's voice. Distracted, I looked up to see a tall woman standing right next to the tree, with giant, owl-like eyes and a toothless smile. I felt a surge of fear, as if my heart had frozen, and someone was choking me. I began chanting Hanuman Chalisa, jumped off my bicycle, and ran as fast as I could. At one point, it felt as if I were flying, as if Lord Hanuman had given me wings to save myself.
The next day, I told my colleagues about the incident. They were surprised, as they knew that no one had ever returned alive from that road. People had experienced unexplained accidents there, as two dahani (elder witches) had been said to inhabit the tree for over a decade.
